"The Morning After" Coffee Cocktail RecipeMany use January as a time to practice Dry January or Drynuary (What is Drynuary, and is it Heatlthy? via Thrillist), but it’s going to be a hard sell in New Orleans this year.  January often comes and goes with little fanfare in the city (besides Twelfth Night on January 6th), but this year is an early Mardi Gras year.  Fat Tuesday falls on February 9th, and with parades starting a few weeks before, let’s just say I doubt the Drynuary concept had many takers.

Oh, and with an abbreviated King Cake Season, forget those 2016 diet promises as well.

"The Morning After" Coffee Cocktail Recipe

So for those of us who are going to throw resolutions out the window (or off of a float), I’ve got the perfect “hair of the dog” cure for foggy mornings.

Part flip, part nog, “The Morning After” Coffee Cocktail is a velvety mix of cold brew coffee, coconut milk, Navy strength rum, Angostura, and a whole egg.  It’s not for the faint of heart, but it will kick you in the pants and get you moving.  Chug a few glasses of water after consuming it, and you’ll be on your way to becoming a functioning member of society again.

"The Morning After" Coffee Cocktail

Ingredients
  • 2 oz. cold brew concentrate (or cold espresso or strong brewed coffee)
  • 2 oz. coconut milk
  • 1-1/2 oz. Navy style rum (Lost Spirits Navy Style Cask Strength is a great one)
  • 1-2 tsp. granulated sugar
  • 3 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 1 organic egg
  • Cocoa powder, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
  1. Combine the cold brew concentrate, coconut milk, rum, sugar, and bitters in a shaker and stir to dissolve the sugar. Add the egg and dry shake (shake without ice) for a few seconds to emulsify the egg. Add ice and shake vigorously for 30 seconds. Double strain into a glass. Dust with cocoa powder and use a toothpick to swirl.
